Show Gunnison "Dry" Tuesday Morning The dry amendment needed no enforcement en-forcement in Gunnison Tuesday morning until, about high noon. It is doubtful if there was a place in the United States, not barring the bleak and banren deserts of the western country, that was as devoid of something to drink as was Gunnison. Gunni-son. When the citizenry awoke at the usual time, and sought the customary cus-tomary place for a drink or a refreshing re-freshing wash, they met disappointment disappoint-ment as a rule, because the pipe line supplying the water was as dry as a desert bleached bone. Neighbors were scurring here and there with pails seeking water and only in a few instances was it found. Sufficient, Suffi-cient, however, was rounded up to supply enough for the coffee pot. The grief, inconvenience and trouble trou-ble was brought about through one of the pipe lines leading from the springs that supplies Gunnison with water, breaking during Monday night. The line had been repaired at one point Monday, but) another break occurred Monday night, thus preventing the huge tank from filling. fill-ing. The new break was discovered at a point where the pipe line passes through a sand bed and some difficulty diffi-culty was had in locating it. As soon as this was done a big crew of men hastily made the repairs and by noon suffering Gunnison was again supplied with water. The city officials have a problem confronting them and it is one that requires immediate attention that of rebuilding the pipe line leading from the springs to the main storage 'tank. During the past few years a considerable amount of money has been expended on repairs due to the deterioratioon of the wooden pipe. This pipe was laid many years ago, and due to its non-lasting qualities, it, as well as bands holding the staves together, is going fast and the added add-ed expense caused by repairs is proving a worry and burden. f Plans,-however, Plans,-however, are being worked but by the city officials and it is likely that some action will be taken to supply funds with which to rebuild the entire en-tire system. When this is done, it is likely that iron will be substituted instead of the. wooden pipe line. |
