Show NORTHWEST GALLS DEATH CHALLENGE Turns Solid Front Against Starvation; Need Everybody's Every-body's Help, Says Divine. Never has the whole Northwest entered en-tered more cheerfully and earnestly into a national work of mercy than it Is right now, with gits of milk, wheat, and fruit, clothing and money, In a concerted effort to banish from Armenia, Southern Russia and Bible lands the spectres of disease and starvation star-vation that are grasping for the lives of unknown thousands of destitute women and more than 300,000 helpless orphans. Under the general leadr-ship of Dr. Sherman L. Divine, 722 Peyton building, build-ing, Spokane, who as Northwest chairman chair-man of the Near East Relief, recently investigated conditions in Armenia, this huge Northwest empire of wealth Is striving to make good as the "foster "fos-ter parent" of some 6,750 orphan children of the Near East. Most of these are the children of America's Armenian allies in the World War. To do this, West Washington must provide for 2500; East Washington and North Idaho, 1250; South Idaho 834' Utah, 1250; Montana. 834, and Alaska for .83 at a cost in food, clothes and funds, of $60 for each child for the year. Dr. Divine's own congregation, thai, of the First Presbyterian churgh of Spokane, is already caring for 50 of them and scores of other churches, Sunday schools, lodges, women's organizations organ-izations and even children of the public pub-lic schools, have accepted it as their job to care for hundreds more. "But this is not a duty for churches and organizations and schools alone," declares Chairman Divine. "It is a work in which the aid of every individual indi-vidual with humanity in their heart is needed. "Just a glimpse of those happy, sweet-faced little children I saw in our orphanages, -pathetically grateful for America's care and protection, which has saved them from death, is proof enough that our work already done has been worth while. "Just a glimpse through the orphanage orphan-age windows at the ghastly contrast, outside; at purple-lipped little skeletons skele-tons of babies tugging at the empty breasts of dying mothers; little heaps of skin and bone and tattered rags, lying in. the streets; tottering groups of women devouring withered, grass; great crowds of starving, half-naked kiddies, beating at the door for admission admis-sion just a glimpse of that is enough proof that it is everybody's task to help. I believe everybody will help." Rushing Gifts From Here. With holiday offerings, wheat donations, dona-tions, generous gifts of milk, old clothes and cash. South Idaho, under the direction of Miss Z. Fay Fowler of Boise, campaign director of the Near East Relief, is selling a rapid pace for the whole Northwest.
