A close watch was kept here Wednesday and Thursday morning, but no trace of the fleeing men was seen. Following the robbery a posse of men, headed by Sheriff Sanderson Bandits and robbers, who hfve 'been terrorizing towns in Sanpete county for the past month or more, added another chapter to the history of crime in the county garly Wednesday Wednes-day morning whe;i they broke into the Bank of Ephraim at Ephraim. At 3 o'clock Wednesday morning Night W7atchman J. F. Anderson discovered dis-covered three men in the bank, and when he approached, the alarm was given and tho men left the bank and a street fight followed, the night watchman being pitted against the three robbers. Fully thirty-five shots were fired, but no one was hit, it is believed. he robbers gained entrance to the bank by prying open a window. The vault door was broken open with nitro glycerine and several of the (Ufety deposit boxes were broken open. Cashier Rasmussen stated that about $1,000 in bonds and other securities were taken. When the robbers found out they had been detected in their work a street fight ensued and some thirty-five thirty-five shots were exchanged between the watchman and the thieves. Night Watchman Anderson had a shot gun, the robbers using revolv- and Deputy Carlcton, took up the trail of the men and were close, and reports Wednesday were to the effect that it was thought the men would be caught. The robbery of the Ephraim bank makes the third visit of the robbers to this county within the past month. A store at Moroni, one at Wales, were visited early in October. Last week the bandits broke into the J. C. Penney Company store at Gunnison Gunni-son and carried away $3,000 in silks, dress goods and overcoats. |
