Show FRANCE, BRITAIN ARM-IN-ARM Delegates to Convention Displayed Friendliness Th?.t Augurs Weil for Future of World. One of the most dramatic and impressive im-pressive Incidents of the second annual an-nual convention of The American Legion Le-gion In Cleveland took place when the-representatives the-representatives of France and Great Britain entered the convention hall arm-in-arm and precipitated an ovation ova-tion that completely disrupted the-conclave the-conclave for several minutes. The-distlnguisbed The-distlnguisbed visitors were Gen. Marie Ma-rie Bmile Fayolle of the French army and ' Admiral Sir William Lowther Grant of the British navy. Gen. Leonard Leon-ard Wood, who accompanied them, also received tremendous applause-and applause-and was called upon for a speech. When the cheering had subsided General Fayolle and Admiral Grant each delivered an address urging that there be no misunderstanding between this country on the one hand and France and Great Britain on the other. "I am acquainted with the high aims of your association and with the-zreat the-zreat mission The American Legion has assumed." said General Fayolle. 'It intends to keep piously the glori- it s remembrance of the dead, to ielp through life all those who came ut of the fight for liberty, and to eep in all hearts the sacred love for our own country which is the spring- '' all civic virtues." After referring to the close ties of iendship and esteem which hind nerica and France together, he ked: "As long as France and America main united who, indeed, would ire henceforth to disturb the peace-Ibe peace-Ibe world?" Admiral Grant voiced a similar lought. "It strikes one as being the-"ry the-"ry acme of culpable negligence and 'olishness," he said, "if we do not sist with all our power the efforts f a comparatively small number of en in our midst to create for their vn purposes bad blood between us." Discussing tbe problem of peace, ieneral Wood declared that "we don't care a rap about party policies." He appealed to the Legion for a sound solution of the big national Issues, foreign relations, national defense and adequate provision for the disabled men and their dependents. |
