Show INSURE OUR SUGAR SUPPLY. Recent heavy rains throughout Utah and Southern Idaho have improved the outlook for the sugar beet crop while conditions in Colorado point to an excellent yield in that state. This means that many millions of dollars will be paid out to the farmers a few months hence when the crop is harvested. It means that the United States will have a domestic sugar supply sup-ply which, while being far from sufficient to supply its wants, will save it from being at the mercy of foreign sugar speculators and producers who would otherwise have a clear field to manipulate the sugar market in this country as they saw fit. It is for this reason that a sufficient tariff be allowed on American beet sugar to protect the American farmer and beet sugar manufacturer and allow them an even break in meeting foreign competition at a minimum price. As a measure to insure our sugar supply it is essential that this industry be protected from extinction by foreign grown sugar produced pro-duced with the cheapest kind of labor. |
