Show Boosters Attend Mass Meeting While the crowd was far below expectations, due no doubt to the inclemency in-clemency of the weather, enthusiasm was loudly manifest at the railroad mass meeting held at the auditorium of the Gunnison Valley high school building last Saturday night. Not more than 150 were present when the citizens were called together to get back of the proposition of having hav-ing the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Rail-road company build a spur track to the Westview and Clarion districts. A great many of the folks attended the stake conference held at Eph-raim Eph-raim and the track meet at Richfield, Rich-field, and this, together with threatening threat-ening weather kept many away. However, those that were present made up largely for the small attendance at-tendance with real enthusiasm. The parade at four o'clock Saturday afternoon, af-ternoon, staged to enthuse all to the importance of the movement, was a great success considering all. Some twenty automobiles, bedecked with appropriate signs, with the Gunnison band, headed the procession. Centerfield Cen-terfield was visited, where selections were given by the' band. From Centerfield Cen-terfield the sugar factory was visited visit-ed after which the caravan of boosters boost-ers returned to the city. It had been planned to visit Fayette and other points but a rain storm put a damper damp-er on this part of the program. The mass meeting was opened with a selection by the Gunnison Glee club after which the objects of the meeting were stated. Several speakers dwelt at length on the importance im-portance of the development of the Great Gunnison Valley, and more especially the westside, which is reputed re-puted to be one of the richest and best in the entire valley of the southern south-ern part of the state. Representatives Representa-tives from both Clarion and West-view, West-view, Fayette, Centerfield and Gunnison Gun-nison were present and expressions of approval of the scheme for insisting in-sisting on the spur track were plenty. Not only will the citizens ask for the railroad but many offers were made for aiding in the building by offering offer-ing right-of-ways, grading and other features that would aid the railroad company in carrying out a program to this end. A resolution was adopted asking that the railroad company take the matter un and a strong committee comprising citizens and business men from Gunnison, and representatives representa-tives from the westside w-ill stortly go to Salt Lake where a formal request re-quest will be made from the railroad rail-road company officials. The exact date of the visit has not as yet been arranged but it is thought that a conference can be arranged for some time next week. |
