Machine Guns and Guardsman Called Upon to Aid Prison Officers Eddyville, Ky., A barrage directed against the state penitentiary dining hull here, where three convicts have barricaded themselves since attempting attempt-ing to escape Wednesday was laid down by twenty-five national guardsmen guards-men and thirty-five prison guards Thursday. A machine -gun on the third floor of the admisistration building and one on the chapel, a short distance from the fugitives' fort, swept the improvised fortress until a fusilaUe of 1C00 rounds was exhausted. The three convicts were reported to have fired twelve shot in return. Guardsmen with rifles and guards with shot guns were also stationed at vantage points. At a signal from Captain Allen Radford, commander of the troops, the ban-age began. Under Un-der its cover three soldiers advanced behind hastily constructed iron sliields, and attempted to fill the place with gas. Some of it was released re-leased on the lower floor, but it flared back, apparently due to a gust of wind, and almost overcame the leader, lead-er, who was forced to flee and abandon aban-don the attempt. The rifle, machine and shotgun fire continued Bteadily for twenty minutes. |
