Show REASON A IJLE I'KOTECTION NEEDED. In our country of high wages, short hours and high standards of living, we quite otten face conditions condi-tions which require government protection pro-tection of certain lines of industry if they continue to operate under our American standards in competition compe-tition with cheap labor, long-hour, foreign protection. We have seen this in our beet sugar industry and we see it in certain cer-tain phases of our mining industry. Various branches of our western mining industry require certain tariff tar-iff protection to place them on an equal basis as compared with the foreign product shipped in here. Particularly is this true in regard to our lead-silver-zinc mines. The Coeur d'Alene district in Idaho Ida-ho normally produces about one-third one-third of the nation's lead, a heavy zinc output and about 10,000,000 , ounces of silver. Many other districts dis-tricts in the west produce important quantities of the same metals. Over 12,000 people in Ssoshone county, Idaho, arc directly suported by the operation of its mines and many more are given employment in other western states. The import tariff rates provided in the Fordney tariff bill will enable our domestic mining industries to compete with the cheap labor products pro-ducts of Europe and Mexico to the great benefit of American labor and capital. It is essential that when necessary ne-cessary our industries be protected sufficiently to allow them to meet this competition but not to kill competition. |
