K I THE STATUE SPEAKS: I, a statue of Justice, sit with my head bowed low. jj From my palace I look over Belgium, loosed from the grip of the foe, ft But my heart is bitter, my shoulders bent, Weary with shame and woe. llere in the chamber of Justice, sacred to rule of right, Came Filth and ribald Destruction, the bastard children of Might. $ ft They wrote on my walls of pure marble, ft On my robe yes on my face $ ft Insults too evil for utterance ; II That eternity cannot erase. j ft And my handmaidens fair, who stand by my chair. ji; Suffered the same disgrace. They pillaged ray treasures of beauty, ' ;i; They left not one thing undefiled. ji: g Then in the Palace of Justice they gazed on their work and they !!: smiled. ;i: ft I sit with their insult upon me and shrink from the light of the sun; I rule o'er the land of destruction where the Mood of my children :;: , has run. . ji: 1, a statue of Justice disfigured, ; A monument to the Hun. :; $ (Copyright. 1920.
