Show New Record Set For Ashton Derby Asbton, Idaho. -Smashing all speed records for a twenty-five-mile course and winning by the narrowest margin in the history of traildom, "Smoky" Gaston. dude-wrangler, trapper and mail carrier of Henry's Lake, captured captur-ed first honors in the American dog derby here Thursday. Tud Kent of Buffalo River, champion for the past two years, crossed the tape just 14 seconds behind Gaston and took second sec-ond money. Third place went to 01-cott 01-cott Zarn, the 15-year-old school boy of Ashton, and George Hlcher of Henry's Lake came in fourth. 'Lyd' Hutchison of Ashton, heroine of last year's classic made a game drive, but was just 2 minutes und 11 seconds too late to get in the money. Despite the soft trail, due to the exceptionally warm weather of the last few days, the first five to finish came in ahead of the time established last year by Champion Kent, which was 2 hours and 35 minutes. Gaston covered the course in the record-breaking time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 38 seconds. Kent's time was 2 hours 9 minutes 32 seconds; Zurn's 2:17:89; Pilchers 2; 27:58; Hutchison's 2:30:09. |
