One hundred thousand dollas distributed by the Gunnison Valley Val-ley Sugar comany to the be- t growers of the Gunison Valhy last Friday came as one of tl.o greatest welcomes and as a result re-sult everybody wears a smile f hapiness and contentment. As n the custom of the big valley manufacturers man-ufacturers the payment of th 2 checks for the October deliveries was advanced five days before :t was really due and for this favcr the beet growers are duly appreciative. appre-ciative. The custom of th'? Gunison Valley Sugar company established the second year of operation and continued ever since, is a record unsurpassed by any sugar company in the state. Ordinarily the contracts set fort'i that payments will be made on the fifteenth of October, but thi.i custom has been set aside by th local company and always the checks are passed out from five to seven days in advance. In addition to the heavy pay-ment pay-ment made on the beets the payroll pay-roll at the factory runs close to $40,000 per month and usually this amount finds its way to the homes of the growers and work-ingmen work-ingmen for services at the factory. fac-tory. "What we farmers of the valley val-ley should do is to just double this distribution of money," said a well known beet grower and a booster for the sugar factory. "If we all cooperate and put forth our best efforts and give the factory fac-tory a four months campaign every year, instead of two, as it i will be this year, there would be dsitributed among us approximately approxi-mately $500,000 every year for beets alone. Add to this a big payroll of about $100,000 annually an-nually and see what would result re-sult in the way of prosperity. Observing Ob-serving the conditions throughout through-out Idaho and Colorado where beets are raised on a large scale the farmers are highly successful and are not facing any losses in their work. Of course many of us here in Gunnison Valley are new at the game but it will not take us long to line up and become be-come professionals and when this is done we can look for higher and better profits from our farms. We have the factory and we must get back of it by supporting it." According to statements from the factory splendid progress is being made in getting the beets harvested and if the weather continues fine for another week or so the crop will be out of the ground and ready for transportation transporta-tion to the factory. At the factory fac-tory everything is r u n n in g smoothly and approximately 600 tons of beets are being sliced every twenty-four hours. |
