Show HAVE ARMY ON SHORT NOTICE Government Could Provide Ample Military Mil-itary Protection In Any Emergency, Emer-gency, Pershing Says. An army large enough to guard every Important bridge and railway terminal, nil Important Industries and oal mines, as well as governmental buildings, could be placed In the field u short notice by the United States government, Gen. John J. Pershing declared de-clared In a statement recently Issued, telling what could be done If this country wore Invaded. Eighteen regular war strength infantry in-fantry divisions of reserves, composed of (300,000 men, an expanded National OJuard with 500,000 men and regular army units, augmented by volunteers to approximately 175.000 men, could be made quickly available, the general gen-eral said. "The national defense act of 10-0," I'orsliing's statement declared, "presorted "pre-sorted that 'the organized peace establishment, es-tablishment, !neluc!::ig the regular jinny, the National Guard and the organized or-ganized reserves, shall Include all of those divisions and other military organizations or-ganizations necessary to form the basis of a complete and Immediate mobilization for the national defense in the event of a national emergency declared by congress.' "The evident Intent," the statement continues, "is that the system of national na-tional defense shall be definitely organized, or-ganized, that the military units required re-quired for service In any emergency shall be constituted In time of peace, and that each of them shall be prepared pre-pared to undertake Ks Initial mission In time to meet the requirements of the situation." |
