Show The Imposition of a tax on foreign for-eign words used by Italian hotels and shops, followed by the attempts of the proprietors to avoid taxation by translating trans-lating well-established foreign words and phrases into Italian equivalents, has been attended by great confusion. In many cases there are no Italian f equivalents for words like "bar," "sport," "coupon," check," "chic," "garage" and "hotel." As to the last the Italian word "albergo" means the-old-tlme inn or tavern. The matter has assumed such a serious aspect at Milan that the hotelkeepers and shopkeepers shop-keepers have petitioned the government, govern-ment, with Ihe help of a professor of languages, suggesting that after a foreign for-eign word has been used for a length of time in the vernacular it ceases to-be to-be foreign, hence many of the words-taxed words-taxed should be exempt. |
