If the pessimists are right, it would seem that the light j;;; would have been extinguished long since and with it the spirit would 1 1 j have departed. 1 1 : i Were history and our daily lives not replete with evidences ; fj gjj noble evidences too of the unselfishness in men's hearts, we might g : - be impressed with the teachings of the sordid and the carpings of p the morbid. Christmas is the symbol and a celebration of love love ; I I which is synonymous with charity and which our purest teaching 1 1 j:;; tells us is the finest attribute of the soul. We, who during the past 1 1 g few weeks have watched the Yuletide preparations, are prepared to p; I p 1 say that they represent a beautiful manifestation of that attribute. I jjji We have noted the working girl taking home at night her par- ; 1 I I I eels; contributions wrung from the dole of her necessities, in order l m z4 j;:; that she may testify to her love and bring a measure of cheer to j 1 j 1 some child, some relative, some friend. Tired from her daily toil may- ; 1 1 hap, but in her eyes that something which transcends all fatigue; 1 I I j transcends, in fact, everything else in the world and comparable only j j j I to that which shone from a mother's eyes upon the Babe in Bethle- I I I hem. Friends, in the face of these and so many other manifestations 1 I I j which we are all witnessing during this season, what right has one 1 1 I I I of us to say that the Light of the World grows dimmer? 1 1 1 1 1 Our hearts tell us there is no dimming. Let us be thankful for 1 1 1 1 1 the extra radiance of Christmas. Let us seek to carry it into our daily 1 1 1 1 1 lives. Our wish is, that this occasion, at least, will help all of us to g jg ! I forget our tribulations and sorrows, our complaints and animosities, 1 1 I I i and that it will be to all a day of cheer and everything which Yule- I I I tide typifies.
