Show Seal Sales to Open On Thanksgiving Day Preparations for the sixteenth annual an-nual sale of Christmas Seals throughout the United States are about completed. In Utah this work will take place under the direction of the Utah Public Health Association. It will commence on Thanksgiving Day and continue until Christmas. The proceeds from these penny seals are used against the spread of tuberculosis tu-berculosis and especially directel toward to-ward preventative measures against disease. Showing what has been done in Utah with the moneys raised by , the sale of Christmas Seals the fol- i lowing statement has been issued by ; James H. Wallis, the executive head : of the Utah Public Health Association: Associa-tion: "1. Financed the Utah Traveling Health Clinic, which started its work in August, 1921, and ended March 15, 1923. The Clinic visited 26 counties coun-ties in the State, and examined 13,-128 13,-128 ersons. A total of 756 active cases of tuberculosis were found, which have since been followed up with personal visits, personal letters, literature, latest boks on tuberculosis tuberculos-is and visits by public health nurses, with most gratifying results. The actual number of persons attending the Clinic and the health meetings held in connection therewith, where motion picture films were shown, was 82,415. 2. Conducted the work of the Modern Mo-dern Health Crusade in the schools, winning two of the eleven national banners awarded each year in the United States for the best h'ealth work, Utah being the only state west of Iowa to capture these much desired de-sired awards. Fifteen thousand of our boys and girls are enrolled this year in this work. 3. Financed in whole or in part the salaries of public health and school nurses in the State. 4. Conducted "Clean School" contests con-tests in several of the counties, with gratifying results to school officials. 5. Employed "Humpty-Dumpty" the National Health Clown, to stage performances at the State Fair and in the schools of nineteen counties in the state. 6. Awarded to a number of deserving deserv-ing schools throughout the State, playground equipment and nursing service-to the amount of $2,625.00. 7. Organized health exhibits for State Fair, county fairs, health shows, schools, etc. 8. Printed and distributed over 300,000 pieces of literature, dealing with tuberculosis, its cause, cure and prevention. 9. Prepared complete cards records and outline maps and charts show- j ing by counties 1357 deaths from ! tuberculosis in Utah during the past seven years. Important and effective as the work described has been, Mr. Wallis believes it can be be made much more so. The larger the sale of Christmas Seals, the greater will be the opportunity to do this. The following fol-lowing program has been mapped out for next year's activities. 1. Will initiate staie-wide movement move-ment for erection of a state tuberculosis tubercu-losis santorium at the next legislature, legisla-ture, of 100 beds, to whjch the unfortunate un-fortunate sufferers from this disease will be taken for treatment. 2. Have agreed to appropriate one-half one-half of all monies raised in Salt Lake County from the seal sale to aid in tuberculosis work at the Salt Lake County General Hospital. 3. Have agreed to assist against cancer in Utah, by organization, illustrated il-lustrated lectures, distribution of literature, and surveys. 4. Will organize dental clinic for service to worthy school children in those parts of the state where no dentist is available. The extent of this service will depend upon the amount of money raised. 5. Will extend the work of the Modern Health Crusade to three additional ad-ditional grades in the public schools. 6. Will continue to finance efficient effici-ent public health nursing service in different sections of the State. 7. Will extend health picture film service and stereopticon lectures and continue the distribution of current literature affecting tuberculosis, cancer, can-cer, and other public health problems. prob-lems. 8. Will prepare portable health exhibits ex-hibits for county fairs, schol exercises, exer-cises, civic entertainments, etc. 9. Will conduct "Clean School" contests in school districts applying for such service. 10. Will continue to make awards to schools where constructive and permanent health work is being observed, ob-served, by formation and observance of proper health habits. |
