To the end of aiding and assisting as-sisting the new railroad company in securing a right of way through the city and providing a site for a depot, the matter was referred to the city council, giving Mayor Jones and his associates power to proceed and appoint', ap-point', committees and to lend all aid possible, both from a moral and financial standpoint. Those present at the mass meeting also pledged all support in aiding the railroad officials offi-cials in securing a right of way through the valley. Mif Kerr, in outlining the work on the proposed road and the ultimate good that wyi rVesult in the construction construc-tion of the road between Juab and the coal fields near Salina, said: "Jesse Knight, known by all throughout the state as one of the progressive business men and community com-munity builders, some years ago pur- chased a large acreage of coal land in Sevier county and has since been developing the same. With a view to placing the coal on the markets, and the idea and the organization of the Utah Central railroad was perfected. ! By the building of the line to Juab an 80-mile haul can be saved on Utah coal to tidewater and a more advantageous advan-tageous grade secured. "Utah coal is in great and growing grow-ing demand, particularly on the Pacific Pa-cific coast. An approximate amount of coal belonging to the Knight and associate interests is placed as lasting last-ing for a period of several hundred years, with a large annual output, 'and the coal is equal to any found in the entire state. "An application to the interstate commerce commission and also to the state utility commission has been .made. This is neeessary under the existing laws and at the hearing to be .held in the pear future, the Central Utah railroad officials anticipate no difficulty in being able to show that the proposed line is both necessary and convenient for the coal business, as well as the general traffic of the valley." Mr. Kerr said that some three or four acres of land would be sufficient 'for a depot site. ' It was voted that the, city buy the three and a half acres and present it for that purpose. Vrhe company also asks a right of way for approxiately one mile through the city limits. The right of way will be 100 feet wide and will cover, all told, some twelve acres of land. Mr. Kerr stated that the permanent perma-nent surveys for the new road were being made and that as sopn as this work was finished and material could be assembled active construction work on the line would be commenced com-menced and hurried to completion j with all speed. |
