Show REDUCE DANGERS FROM FIRE. When one reads the annual losses running into many millions of dollars dol-lars caused by matches, cigar and cigarette stubs and pipe ashes, one ; cannot but marvel at the lack of interest in-terest shown by the manufacturers of these articles in educating smokers smok-ers to the dangers of fire. Practically Practic-ally every package of matches, tobacco, to-bacco, cigarettes or cigars has print-' ed literature in the package or around the article in question. So far only one manufecturer of cigarettes in the United States is cooperating in the campaign for fire reduction. The Liggett and Myers Tobacco company is putting a tag in their cigarette packages which says, "Be sure to extinguish match, cigar or cigarette before throwing away." Supposing all match boxes, cigarette cigar-ette .packages, cigar boxes and cigar lables included in the printed matter on these articles a warning in red letters in regard to the danger of fire. It would cost the companies practically prac-tically nothing additional to do this. As manufacturers of articles causing caus-ing fire hazards they would be showing show-ing their sincerity and carefulness where the best interests of the public pub-lic was involved. Incidentally they might eliminate drastic regulations relative to their products which may develop in the future. Why not co-operate in the beginning, begin-ning, gentlemen, instead of waiting until you may be forced to do so. |
