Show Governor Grants Stay of Execution Salt Lake City. Eleventh hour attempts at-tempts to save the life of George Gardner, convicted slayer of Deputy Sheriff Gordon Stuart, resulted in a reprieve or stay of execution Thursday Thurs-day which gives the convicted man a new lease now rests with the state board of pardons. There is doubt as to the sanity of Gardner, the special sanity commission appointed Thursday Thurs-day morning reported back to Gov. Charles R. Mabey. The reprieve given giv-en Friday marks the first victory gained by the defense in a case which for more than a rear has occupied oc-cupied a position of notoriety in the public eye. Gardner shot Stuart and Joseph V. Irvine April 15, 1922 and was charged and convicted of murder mur-der In the first degree for the slaying of the former. |
