Show I'ATIENT MI ST CO-OPKRATK ! Did you ever try to lift yourself by your boot-straps? A whole lot the same result is obtained ob-tained in the meetings and programs to discuss "unemployment." Behind the question of unemployment unemploy-ment are certain fundamental problems prob-lems which must be settled in order that conditions may result which prevent unemployment, or rather re-" re-" move the causes of unemployment. Political remedies merely stave off the reckoning, unless those remedies are aimed to help create conditions which will bring about ultimate employment em-ployment through natural channels, rather than by tho artificial stimulants stimu-lants of bond issues and the like to create temporary employment for more or less unnecessary undertakings, undertak-ings, which leave an ultimately larger larg-er burden on the country and the taxpayers. Commenting on the situation, the Yall Street Journal says: "There is only a relatively slow cure for unemployment. un-employment. This is increased production, pro-duction, out of the surplus of which, and out of that alone, new employment employ-ment can be found. "All the money in the savings banks will not provide for the unemployed. unem-ployed. If it were withdrawn and given to them today, its withdrawal would cause more unemployment in other directions. There is no sudden sud-den cure. There is 110 cure whatever which does not involve co-operation! by the patient. He must change his habits. He must quit lying to him-fcplf him-fcplf about his standard of living. 11c must quit lying to his employer about ' his capabilities. lie must quit lying about the work he turns out. Our public departments must quit encouraging encour-aging him to lie. The department of labor must revise its cost of living figures to date. To tell the unemployed unem-ployed they can be helped by splitting split-ting the day's work between two applicants ap-plicants for employment is a cruel jest on consumer and producer alike. The only result would be to decrease production 40 per cent." The consuming world is again demanding de-manding full service for its dollar and the sooner this fact is recognized the sooner will the unemployment problem bo solved. J |
