On the 17th inst,, we had the 1 dignitaries of the Bear River Canal Co., W. H. Rowp, President and j business manager of the Co.. and uthers here in our town on business busi-ness connected with the works. All who had the pleasure of talking with Mr. Rowe seem to be favorably favor-ably impressed with him. Last Sunday evening we were treated to a royal feast in the shape of a lecture, delivered by Richard Morse, a good Samaritan. The health of the people generally gener-ally is good, and we are1 looking for good old Santa Claus. J. Fielding, Utah, Dec. 20. PORTAGE. Newsy Letter-Conference-Finest School House Will Get Married. Editor Bugler: The Malad Stake Conference , convened in Portage on the 10th and 11th inst. We had a good time, listening to the good and timely instructions from the various vari-ous speakers. Besides the Stake Presidency and Council, Pres. Seymour Sey-mour B. Young and George H. Gibbs of Salt Lake City, were on the stand. The pinging, under the directon of Prof. D. P. Jones, aided considerable to make the conference a source of great pleasure. We are having very mild weather, which is a good thing for the stockmen stock-men who have not very much feed. Our beautiful school house is nearing completion. It will be ready for occupancy after the holidays. holi-days. Our worthy Supt., D. C. Hubbard, Hub-bard, while here visiting the school, gave us credit of having the finest school house in Box Elder County. We have two schools running in the district; ' one in Washakie, taught by L. D. Jones, and one in Portage, under the direction of Wm. Anthony. Both are well attended. at-tended. In spite of the hard times, the boys and girls will get married-William married-William II. John, son of Wiu. and , Sarah John of Portage, was spliced ; today to Miss Ida P. Ward, daughter daugh-ter of George and Eunice Ward of j Woodruff, Oneida Co., Idaho, at the hitter's residence, where a grand reception was given by the bride's parents to a host of relatives and friends, and concluded with a grand ball in the Portage Hall, which is now in progress. Sixty fivecouplcs participated. Howard Hale made a flying trip home from Neeley ville, Oneida Co.. Idaho, where he is engaged teaching teach-ing school. He stopped long enough to tell his mother he was on his way to Collinston to meet the train and Miss Minnie Lance of Millville. He will accompany her to Salt Lake City, where they ex- |
