Show FRENCH AWARD IS DECLINED Legion's National Commander Accepts Ac-cepts Honor Only In Name of Those Who Served. Hanford MacNlder Is one of the negligible number of persons who de- clined the aware of "commander ol the Legion oi Honor," proffered by the French government. Mr. MacNlder, as national na-tional commander of the American Legion, adroitly shifted the honor to the heads of a million soldiers. He said that he could receive the 1 decoration only as a tribute to all Legjonnalres and when the medal arrives ar-rives It will be deposited in the archives ar-chives of the Legion. When he received the notification of the award, he cabled Marshal Foch : "In the name of 5,000,000 service men and women represented by the American Legion, we extend through you to the President of the French republic re-public our gratitude over the tribute proffered. Realizing that this is not awarded to me personally we accept It for every man and woman of our organization and ln extending our deep thanks pledge to France our continued love and devotion," Mr. MacNlder was made a, chevalle of the Legion of Honor on the battlefield battle-field in 1918. |
