Show Farmers Urged To Use Early Waters New irrigation methods arc to be demonstrated throughout the county this spring, according to the announcement an-nouncement being Bent out by C. O. Stott, county farm agent. Mr. Stott has addressed a letter to many of the farmers and is urging the experimentation experimen-tation be tried and explains the results re-sults in his letter which follows: Whether or not late fall irrigation or early spring irrigation of alfalfa on the higher ground of Sanpete county pays, will be demonstrated this spring and summer at Christen-burg, Christen-burg, Manti, and other parts of the county. Only recently, while tho winter snows were still in evidence and the surface of the soli was wet with excess ex-cess moisture, it was shown by the use of the soil auger in various localities local-ities on the medium high and higher alfalfa lands, that perfectly dry soil existed at various depths rarrging from 18 to 36 Inches. Any farmer can in a very few minutes determine whether or not his land is in this condition by the use of his shovel, if he hasn't a soil auger. .' While the surface soil is yet wet with the winter's moisture is the best time to apply additional water, when dry soil is found at a short distance below the surface. In this condition water applied to the surface will be readily conducted downward to the dry soil and held there, while if the water is applied later after the surface sur-face soil has dried out it will be impossible im-possible to penetrate the surface soil to get to the lower depths. A damp spunge takes up moisture much more readily than a perfectly dry one. The same is true with the soil. It Is maintained by those who are in a position to know that one good early irrigation on alfalfa will 'take the place of from three to five later Irrigations.' This fact will actually be demonstrated on various plats of ground in the county this summer. Use the early water, farmers; it will pay you well. Do not let even a drinking stream pass your lands. Try this idea out and demonstrate the principle to your own satisfaction, after first determining whether or not you have the dry soil layer underneath un-derneath the surface. Convince yourself' your-self' by using your shovel to, determine deter-mine the moisture conditions of the subsoil. |
