Show IibutetBd OPENING SESSION OF CONGRESS DEVOTED TO SERVICES FOR DEPARTED MEMBERS. Reunion of Lawmakers Tinged With Sadness Because of Heavy Toll Death Had Taken in the Past Few Months. Washington The -closing session of the sixty-first congress opened at noon Monday. No business was transacted, trans-acted, both branches meeting merely to appoint a joint committee formally to apprise the president that the legislative legis-lative branch of the government waa ready to proceed to call the rolls, and to adjourn after adopting resolutions to the memory of members who had died since congress last met. The usual animation marked the opening in both the senate and house, but the reunion of old friends was tinged with sadness because of the heavy toll death had taken in the last few months. In consequence, the senate was in session only a quarter of an hour, while the house was in session fifty minutes. More than usual interest was manifested mani-fested in the opening, because of the passage of the balance of political pow- j er with the session. As a reuslt the j galleries were crowded. Speaker Can- non's entrance in the house was the ' signal for prolonged applause, while Champ Clark, hailed as the next speak- 'r t er, was given an equally enthusiastic reception. |
