Show old ferron landmark story highlights pioneer struggles an abandoned decaying log house one of the old landmarks of ferron utah stands in such a thick tangle of brush run wild and matted tree branches that it was difficult to photograph but its story is so interesting that it would be a shame to let it die and be forgotten in the mists of time the two room log cabin was built about 75 years ago by bishop frederick olsen for his second wife according to deborah huntsman of ferron she said that he had built a home for bis his first wife just across the street but that it was torn down years ago bishop olsen held his of fice in ferron from 1883 to 1895 and his second family lived for many years in this interesting log house which still has prolific yel low roses blooming in its verdure choked door yard the story is also told of how it was at least once used as a hospital according to mrs eva killpack a relative of hers steve williams by name was bringing a wagon load of wood into his farm yard at emery when one of the horses stumbled and upset the wood mr williams thrown vio bently to the ground suffered a broken leg the nearest doctor was at salt lake city more than miles to the north furthermore there was no telephone at emery but there was one line out of ferron so a man was dispatched to ride horseback to ferron ferran a dis tance of 16 miles to call the doc tor arriving at ferron he called dr alien allen in salt lake city said mrs killpack and the doctor agreed to come to price utah by tram train the horseback rider agreed to see that the doctor was met at price with a team and wagon to bring him to ferron a distance of 42 miles from price in the meantime the injured steve williams was loaded into the box of a wagon and trans ported to the home of the bishop s second wife in ferron to await the arrival of dr alien allen by the time the doctor and the injured man could be gotten to gether infection had developed in the injured leg and the only way to save the man mans s life was to amputate the leg at once dr alien allen effected the amputation in this pioneer home and without the aid of any anesthetic accord ing to the story mrs killpack has always heard for many days steve hovered between life and death in the old house but the miracle is that he lived for weeks he lay in the good bishop s house slowly gathering enough strength to finally be moved back to his home in emery mrs kill pack remembers that stouthearted old steve lived long enough to wear out an artificial leg 41 A this old log house built more than 75 years ago in ferron itah utah by bishop frederick olsen still stands as an old landmark of 0 arly early pioneer struggles it is half hidden in a dense grove of tree trees and nd bushes the foliage of which is so interlaced and matted tha that taking a clear picture was difficult even though the sun wai was rightly brightly shining an old fashioned cooking range can be seen stand ing is beside the door |
