Show EX-MARSHAL IIEYWOOD. Ex-Marshal Heywood is now a private citizen. We think President Roosevelt made a mistake in taking the office from him. We believe it was under a misapprehension of the facts, that had he know the real truth his own manhood would have revolted at making the change. In what he did, the president in removing Mr. Heywood gave aid and comfort to a kingdom which, no matter how it poses, nurses as its first and dearest thought the hope that the time will come when it fl' can do as it is now doing in Utah control the majority of the states of this Union and cause this republic, founded by the wisdom of the fath-H, fath-H, ers who were inspired by Almighty God to create fl a land of liberty, to pass away, to turn this republic over to the rule of a despotism precisely like the despotism that has kept Asia a land of semi-bar-f barism while one hundred and twenty generations H of men have lived and died. H But that doesn't alter the status of Ben Hey- wood in the least. He goes out of office as he , went in, carrying with him his self-respect and the W. consciousness that he has never failed in any duty Hf imposed upon him by his oath of office or the re- Hjj quirements of his office. He goes out as he went in Hj a man, an American citizen in the highest sense Bi of the term, and' if President Roosevelt meant his Hji dismissal as a reproof that he did not join his Hf efforts to those, who were counting on making H' Utah return to the rule of priests and hypocrites, i he failed for once in his intentions, and whatever . disgrace attaches to the matter, not one speck IH of it attaches to Ben Heywood. Henry Clay said: IH "I would rather be right than president." A good H! many men have repeated that since Hnry Clay's death, but Ben Heywood' can paraphrase it and yl l say: "I would not be wrong, I would not debase myself, I would not carry self-reproaches .io .my pillow for all the offices within the, gift not only, of the president but of the whole republic. |
