Show HE BROWN AND YELLOW PERILS. The world may well keep an eye on Japan. One thousand picked Chinese students are sent annually to Japan to complete their education. Japan is training the Chinese army and expects to have half a million Chinese under perfect mili-tary mili-tary training in thd next six years. She is laying jH the keels of half a dozen great battle ships and more cruisers, and now her admiralty say that the most modern battle ship is obsolete; that their idea is for 22,000 ton battle ships and 15,000 ton cruisers of twenty-five knot speed. The battle ships will each carry twelve 12-inch guns. She has several submarine boats built in the United States, and so well pleased is she that she is go-ing go-ing to order more. The naval power that goes up against Japan ten years hence will have something worth while to contend against. She has virtually taken charge of China, and will control her trade within two years from this date. There is very lit. tie doubt that it was Japan that initiated the boy-cott boy-cott against American goods. The best proof is that the trade of the United States with China fell off more than $20,000,000 last year, while Japan's -trade increased by just about the same number of millions. When the railroads are pushed to the , iron and coal fields of China, and new factories fl are completed to absorb China's wool and iron, both Japan and China can insist upon the "open door" with the world and then with Oriental humor both countries can smile at the efforts of the generous nations to compete with them. They will be ready for anything that may come, be it the strain of war or the competitions of peace. |
