Show All Gone Carl Schurz was about the last survivor of the ' strong men who were prominent from '56 until 1 tho war was over. All, we think, have passed out of public life, and hardly one, If any one, is 'M left alive. One by one, In both civil and military life, they have passed on. Some of them left names that will be remembered as long as will the names of the giants that first fashioned and ' 'M launched tho republic. Thero was never any-thing any-thing more spectacular in war than Sherman's march to tho sea; no finer generalship was -ever displayed than Grant's capture of Vicksburg; no ; higher soul ever shone out in history than tnat of Abraham Lincoln. And there were a great host besides. It does not seem long ago, but they are all gone. What man has to do ho must do quick-ly, quick-ly, ere tho windows be darkened and the mourn-ers mourn-ers go about the streets. |
