The following week, George Ade's "The County Coun-ty Chairman," which needs no introduction, will be the attraction at the Salt Lake Theatre the first part of the week. In "Magda" and "Niobe" at the Grand this week, the patrons of that house have been treated treat-ed to a delightful surprise in the work of Miss Georgie Harper who is an actress far above the average women in stock, and who is- surounded by a company intelligent enough to make the productions pleasing. Miss Harper will play another week at the Grand. Mr. Ben Davis first came to this country in 1893', being engaged to sing at he World's Fair in Chicago. He eagerly looked forward to the trip. On the night before sailing he received a cablegram cancelling the engagement. "Never mind, let's, go" urged Mrs. Davies; "something may come of it." He thereupon cabled: "Too late, I'm sailing tomorrow." Tjpon his) arrival in Chicago, the Welsh people and the World's Fair L Music Committee jointly ananged to give seven p concerts . Nothing was said to Davies about the terms. Every concert proved to be a greater success than the preceding one and they were attended by immense audiences. At the end of the series, which lasted ten days the manager called Davies into his office and handed him a pile of bills about a foot high, to the value of the original contract for $5,000.00. Thus, did something some-thing come of it as Mrs." Davies prophesied. Mr. Davies has visited this country many times since then. By many, he is ranked next to the famous fa-mous Santley. |
