Show NEW BOOKS. A Critique of Socialism.. By Edward F. Adams. Paul Elder & Co., San Francisco, Publishers. A shrewdly and quaintly written criticism of Socialism. The boo is an essay prepared and read by Mr. Adams before the Ruskin Club of ( Socialists in Oakland, Cal., in criticism of the beliefs be-liefs of those present. The book is most entertaining, enter-taining, but at the same time seriously combats the theories of Socialists. It is gotten up in beautiful form, printed on Cheltenham paper, bound in boards and decorated in rule design by Harry Marsh. From Paul Elder & Co., San Francisco, comes a little gem of Bible Mosaics, Promises, Commands, Com-mands, Admonitions and Answers. Really a booklet book-let of Bible quotations. Most convenient to the general reader, a great help to writers. It is at once unique, useful and beautiful. j A very handsome holiday volume, from the house of Paul Elder & Co., of San Francisco, is I a compilation by Jennie Day Haines, containing some very apt and well selected quotations under, the title of "Sovereign Woman versus Mere Men." The work is most artistic in binding and typography. typo-graphy. From the same house comes the clever and unique "Cynic's Calendar of Revised Wisdom for 1906," to the sparkling pages of which Ethel Watts Mumford, Oliver Herford and Addison Mizner are the contributors. The present volume contains all the inverted and transposed maxims which appeared in the Calendars for the two previous pre-vious years. Altogether this holiday offering is most original and attractive. The first issue of "The Western Homeseeker" has just been issued, and is a most commendable little journal. It is published in Missoula, Mont., S and will be devoted to the interests of that re- gion and the west generally. The purpose of the J journal is praiseworthy, and the matter contained in the initial volume is ably written. j Two volumes for the little folks which should attract attention during the holiday season are a "Child's Book of Abridged Wisdom," an ingen- j iously written and illustrated work by Childe ; Harold, and "Teddy Sunbeam," containing some interesting children's stories by Grace Sperry. I Both are published by Paul Elder & Co., of San j Francisco. j |
