Show Who Are Republicans. B It is pathetic almost to rea1 in Mr. Smoot's or- fl gan that "Senator Smoot is not the Republican B party of Utah and he never had claimed to he. B The Republican party of Utah is bigger than is B Mr. Smoot or than any other one man or hundreds B of men. Mr. Smoot as a factor of influence in the' B control of the party in this state is by no means fl the issue." B That sounds a good deal like les majeste, un- H less it was permitted by Mr. Smoot himself. It fl will ake many another importation into Utah to B convince old timers that Mr. Smoot was not the fl Republican, party two years ago. It will take his fl organ a long time to prove that he did not come up fl here and name a list of gentlemen for the various fl state oflices "which no one but he could have fl thought of, or that he, with the approval of the fl first presidency, did not force the nominations and H election of those men solely by the "grace of God," B that is, the rank and file of the Mormon church B were given instructions that enough of them vote B for those candidates to elect them, and they would fl have been elected if it had required every Mormon H vote in the state. B Mr. Smoot's organ further says that every Re- B publican in the state wants Mr. Smoot retained B in his seat which they elected him to All. That H doesn't blind anyone's eyes. The men whoueslre B that Mr. Smoot shall be denied his seat and sent B home are riot doing it on account of Mr. Smoot at fl all. They want notice served on the Church of B Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to keep its B hteh officers out of politics and to stop the ac- B cursed rule of their people in politics, which they B have been exercising since 1848, with one little B interval for a year or two when statehood was B first obtained. And when Mi. Smoot's organ reads B everyone out of the Republican party who does fl not accept this un-American and traitorous rule of H a kingdom that is trying to build up a despotism B on this free, soil, the result will be, if persevered B in. that the so-called Republican partyin Utah fl will be compc 3ed of 95 per cent Mormons, and L5 !er cent gentiles of that class who for a mess -pf. : of political pottage, are willing here to give away their birthright as American citizens. |
