Show MEXICO AND THE UNITED STATES. V The peaceable conquest of Mexico by the men B of the United States is going on rapidly. A B writer in the National Magazine gives some of the fl figures. More than $30,000,000 of American fl money is there in permanent investments. Chi- fl cago has thirty Mexican investment companies at fl work there and is sending more than $1,000,000 fl per month to develop the properties of these com- fl panies. Not long since in the city of Monterey fl more than $10,000,000 of American money was in- fl vested in a single plant. The Standard Oil has fl invested during the past two and a half years more than $18,000,000 in Mexican mines and these I call for $40,000,000 more in development, ma- chinery and roads. Altogether, there are more I than 1,200 American companies operating in fl mfnes, Ih lamdsj; in ' water works to supply cities ' with electric light arid' power plants, etc. President M Diaz is at the helm and' all is peace; he believes 1 he has things so adjusted that when he passes on BI the quiet and security will remain. But suppose Mm there shall be kindled again the old revolutionary I j spirit which made chaos of Mexico so long, what B then? The Americans who have interests there H; will for their own self-preservation join with the B 1 regular government to preserve order and if they Bfc fail, volunteers from the southwest will be called wA for and order restored. Then those men will If naturally have recognition by the government, BI I and while it will continue a Mexican government, Bjj it will in part at least be under control of men HI from the United States. There will be no an-Bj an-Bj nexation, no one wants that, but the relations be-Br be-Br n Mexico and the United States will be akin B' to those between the United States and Cuba. B Ten years hence the yield of the mines of Mexico B will excite world-wide interest and draw capital B from all the capitols of Europe that way for in-B-, vestment, for it is true that the richest known BJ mines are there. Mexico, of her own people, has Dw about 3,000,000 progressive men. The other B I 9,000,000 do not care. If they earn money enough B on Monday to support thdnselves through the B week, they do not work any more until the next mi Monday. Diaz saw this thirty years ago and in-BU in-BU vited enterprising foreigners to come and help put his country on its feet. The invitation was ac- i cepted and that country will always be in honor j bound to make good the promise then made. It is a great country; it is going to be a much greater country in the near future. |
