Show H JfllKOf THE CIRCUS- Ib flPjj! The following is from tho Haileyburian and H hIwMb Temiskaming Journal, of Halleybury, New On- Hg ''"fnHK tario, and it is a classic. Next week is circus H 1 ' WHb week in Zion, and if the Soils and 4 Paw peo- 01 tlH Plo can produce anything to equal the following, H'mMW the Slad hand of fellowship will be waiting with Hh 'IbSh ne ltey to the city In part tne artlcle says: 'ffflSffi TIl great Cole Bros- United Show has come ' usBtfi nnd 6one From the start they usecl us lairly, HH 'f mHm and kept the same game up to the finish. We watched the "Parade," that essential the ab- KE -nSHH sence of which nearly "broke" Sir Henry Irving, H !1HIKI8P in Russia, or some other highly civilized place. H illProBr Jt was just splendid, and in itself alone snould h ''iBSi! make a record day in this New Haileybury. We, Hffl lliltwi m our mcial capacity as custodian of the town, Hll ' 'SmbI were fearful lest it should rain on that great day, HI JiflfPa which, thank goodness, it did not. Otherwise the at i'nl elephants might have done on our clay hills the Hh ''HllHi sliding act that we witnessed at the Hippodrome Hal ''vnlm n New York, where they slid down a hill, into H 5WjKB a tank of far less proportion than Temiskaming Hm 'HBl Lake, out of which they were rescued far more w "' 'HHR easily than they could have been out of Temls- V -jjHBBl We stood at a corner, trying, with our limitei Rl hbB intellect, to take in all the show. The first thing BH '! llat strucc us was the magnificence of the horses. BlH ' lifSlK They were superb, and some of them, when the H j Jgflmj band began to play, thought that they had to per- HUf iHiHh form, but were quickly reminded by the voice of HH C.BM! the driver that this was only a preliminary. H 'IranE There was a steam engine that played music, and H '"IllHRf we thought what a blessing a thing like that flfffl vHBb would be in heaven, as a kind of a rest from HnS 'lliflfll twanging harps. We noticed the agonized ex- Rfl 'ffiBB pression of the animals as they were jolted over Eli i ' m9H our PrImItlve r&ds, and we loved the lions, who, Hf wil H when they heard the harking of Waboose and his K iHH mate, rose upon their hind legs and wanted to get Hp!! TBaHl at them. Fortunately, the bars were solid, hence M ' T'hS those two dogs are still alive. Hi ' 'JIIiHbI whole procession perambulated in a peace- '''' iu9HI manner oven to the clowns, whose antics are Hf IkH often imitated, in this country, without masks. B m'II&mK The elephant was a beauty. It was superb anl Hiti ' BH wel1 Reserves the legend writ large upon its cov- hHH -. HifflBwi ering. We saw it performing tho useful act, In- Kill ' JPB stead of the ornamental. When a wagon got into kI ' our Haileybury mud, so that about three or four Hll :'' wSSKt teams could not draw it, this patient, well trained Hill JHhB animal simply put its forehead against it, and out kSI ''I'IhhBI "she" came. We saw an animal that resembled nil ' fHjHi a red deer, turned black, with spots, which peace- Hffi ::s,Wbm1 fulIy ato lmy' ln splte ot olts' Its llorns were li BaHi 1IIce those of a cow, drawn out straight. This Hi is5Lw heast seemed very precious, probably on account mil -f jSusK There were bears, but. somewhat more atten- Blfii -ImRhB uated than our native boars, probably because tne HeUl lii'lnH poor t)0asts got no hlueberries. IHkI ' ImboB After tho "parade" was over we wandered aim- VUl TflHB lessly around. We saw knots of men gathered fSl fflnl around gentlemen who presided over tables, upon hII Ji&fli which were played many innocent games, such as mil "Heads I win, tails you lose." We were appealed tiff i'IB to, and were peremptorily ordered to stop it. We $1 ''liSHSp did- so, hut, after all, we could not seo much dif- Bffl ''jjfi ference between the games that were being played than those that are played at the Woodbine race3; or, for the matter of that, at Haileybury, when a "wild-cat" mining scheme is set afloat. Suckers can always be caught, and whether it is best to catch them on horse racing, values of stock, or a straight lottery, is yet a mooted point ,not to mention men-tion innocent little games, such as we allude to. Perhaps, after the loss of their dollars, the young men to whom we allude had less money to "blow in," and hence saved the constable a job. But we must not forget the "circus." We went to the side-shows and were much affected. They were all up to date and very good. The man who could stretch his neck like that would be a tough puzzle to the hangman. We thought, as we watched him, that he should at once take up the study of murder. The singing was excellent, and as harmony always al-ways has a charm for us, we enjoyed those cadences ca-dences to the full. The sword swallower was not so Impressive, for we have lived so long in the bush that we have been glad at times to swallow something tougher than swords. We may, for want of space, omit to mention all those who occupied the side show, but we can assure all our readers, without the slightest suspicion sus-picion of persiflage, that it was "all right," an ' every credit is due to the management for its selection. se-lection. We forgot the poor wild man. Somebody whispered whis-pered in our ear that he was Irish, but we spurned the idea, for he ate lumps of raw meat, and there was no attendant physician present. We then went into the circus proper, and we considered it to be simply wonderful. We had time, as we sauntered in, to look at the animals, and as it was evening, we concluded that they had been fed, for they were lying comfortably full, some even snoring, just as our cat does, after somewhat overeating itself, and we were glad of it, for surely some compensation should be due to these poor, interesting creatures, deprived of their liberty. We could not help noticing the black panthers, the sfgHT of which brought to our mind Conan Doyle's famous story. In the "ring" we found gathered some of the most famous acrobats and performers of the American continent. We could not give a detailed account of each performance, for we do not know the names oi the performers; besides, so many vere performing perform-ing at the same time. There were girls being thrown from one trapeze to be caught by a man swinging from another. A man was "monkeying" with a pole, slung high in the air, with surer hand and foot than we could do the same thing upon a stairway, and a good safe one at that. Upon a wire a girl jumped over a table and a chair, with the same ease with which an ordinary girl will jump over a skipping rope. A woman would support her whole family, including in-cluding her husband, with het shoulders, whereas she usually does it with her hands. Men swung, at perilous altitudes, by their toes, and we believe some by their eyelashes. With a little more training we believe that that bicycle troupe, directed by Mr. W. A. Schaar, will be able to dispense with bicycles altogether and float around on air; in fact, it was a marvelous combination, and such a thing may not again be seen in Haileybury in the near future. We omitted omit-ted to mention the equestrian performances, but we must say that they were wonderful;"' tho training of the horses and the skill of the riders were beyond the ordinary, so much so that wo are afraid lest every kid will pick upon some of the too numerous horses on the street in emulation emula-tion and thus leave sorrowing parents. The officials were courteous, and even kindly. The employees were quiet and gave no trouble to the town, though, for the matter of that, the thousands thou-sands of visitors behaved in a manner that is a credit to their nationality. They talk about rough miners. As a matter of fact, right In Haileybury there was gathered together on that day a crowd that would be an object lesson to any city in Canada. Can-ada. No ordinary city could do it, including tho sacred city that is so much exercised about the salvation of our souls. We have taught them a lesson and we hope that they will lay it to their hearts. We forgot tho little dog, the little creature that stood upon its head or its heels and would crawl around Its owner, more like an insect tnun a dog. We envy the man the possession of such a dog, but wo do not envy his feelings when the poor little beast dies. Little Kiddy gave her opinion, and it was to this effect: "I saw lots of funny animals. There were elephants. The great big elephant stole tho peanuts from the baby elephant, so the baby elephant ele-phant was mad and threw hay over herself. Then 'Munna' gave the baby elephant some peanuts, and it was glad. It put them into its mouth, and went 'munch, munch, munch.' There was a man who rode on a horse, with his leg stuck uq, and the clowns laughed those are funny clowns. They do very silly things. They set fire to the hat of one of the silliest, and then ran after him. "A lady rode on a horse, and took her dress off, but she had her 'underdose on. Yes, I like circuses, and wish, that one would come again on I my birthday," I |
