Studied in St. Petersburg, began to assist his father in his engineering works, but soon took up the study of high ex-plosives. ex-plosives. In 1864 he took out a patent for dyna- mite, obtained by incorporating nitro-glycerine with some porous substances. Later he invented bollcstrite, a nitro-glycerine smokeless powder.
