Show W. I. SALKILD DEAD. H The California newspapers bring the news of ' the death by suicide on April 14th, of W. I. Sal- H kild. It is sad news to thousands in all this inter- W mountain region. He was a famous mill builder W and a clear-brained, winsome man. It seems he H had in the last few years lost his hearing. He H owed some petty debts which worried him, so he )W waited until his 72nd year had closed and then mM took his own life. He went from Ohio to Can- ' fornia in 1854. We was a schoolmate and life-long H friend of Mr. L. Colbath of this city. He was in tho j employ of the Ontario company from 1878 to 1884. H He built hoisting works Nos. 2 and fi 3 on the Ontario, No. 2 on the Daly, H and rebuilt No. 1 after the fire. He also set W the great Cornish pump on the Ontario and re- H constructed and added to the Ontario mill. He W was exceedingly loved by all who came in contact W with him. Craig Chambers leaned on him inv W plicitly and loved him like a brother. Had Craig W lived Salkild would not have committed suicide. H He left a letter stating that on account of W his age and deafness he was practically incapacl- W tated for further work, and, worrying over some W petty debts, ho determined to end the struggle. W It is pitiable. He was most capable, most hon- W est, a gentle, genial man, and loyal as the stars. W The letter stated that he had met many reverses H during the past five years and it seems his cour- W age under the repeated blows snapped off like H a crystalized stamp in a quartz mill. It Is safe jH to say he never through his long life did an In- H tentional wrong, and wherever tried the sterling H manhood of the man revealed Itself and It was al- H ways pure gold. That such a man should die sucn H a death is most sorrowful. There will be a hun- Wmm dred rich men on the coast who will exclaim on wkm reading the news: "Why did he not tell me he H was in need?" Well, ho could not do it. He was H a lion by nature and when wounded preferred to H go to his lair and die rather than raise one do- H spairing roar. H |
