This is the second time in the past five years that Coach Houston has received this honor and he was extremely proud of the team who took him to the championshipo once again. Lady Bobcats Enter State Finals In First Place By John Yardley Curtis Barney leads his number-one-ranked Lady Bobcats into the State Finals this week in St. George at the Burns Arena. The Bobcats are the defending 1A champions. It will not be easy to win it all again, but it is possible. Wayne, Green River, Dugway and Rich all seemed poised and ready to deny back to back titles for Panguitch. In final league play, PHS turned back a gutsy performance by Angie Alvey's Lady Moquis 48-36 in Panguitch. Nice hustle and team play put Escalante up at the half 21-20. The Bobcats, however, battled back to outscore the Moquis 26-15 in the second half. Camile Christensen made 20 points for PHS, while Shelly Hatch hit some big shots on her way to 12, Maxi Miller scored 8, Lacee Leach 6 and Kali Moore 2. For Escalante, Brittany Sandefer knocked down 14 in another very solid game with 4 Jamie Lyman and Becky Crawford hitting, for 6 each, and Andrea Christensen and Sarah Rawlins each scored 5. Escalante was the third place team in Region 15 and should win their playoff game earlier in the week to make it into the state finals, as well. Bryce Valley finished their season with a loss, but showed improved play, losing to Piute 83-65. 83-65. Sheena Clark banged away again putting up 27 big points for the second game in a row. Crystal Chynoweth scored 13 to also end in double figures. The whole team had a fine effort for Coach Brady Syrctt. In boys basketball, Panguitch led Escalante 34-19 at the half, only to see some fine shooting from the Moquis bring it closer in the third quarter, 42-31. However, llie Bobcats went on a 14-2 run ;uxl never looked back, winning 68-39. (See SPORTS NEWS on Page 5A) SPORTS NEWS (From Front Page) Dusty Orton pumped in four threes on his way to 20 points, but it was excellent all around team play and scoring that won this one for PHS. Acey Buringham and Mark Tebbs each scored 1 1, while Jaycen Walter and Skyler Dalton each hit for 10. Derrick Shakespear and Ivan Singh both nailed 10 and Terrence Mitchell scored 8 to lead EHS. Panguitch Coach Scott Hunt now takes his team to Wendover for a final non-league game before the region tournament. Coach Jim Smith, and his Moquis have one more league game. In all liklihood, these same two teams will meet the first day of region in Richfield. Bryce Valley played the number one team in the region, losing to Valley 63-45. The Buffaloes play very good defense and held the high scoring Mustangs in check. Cole Twitchell had a nice outting with 15, but Lucas Ramsey and Shannon Pollock were held to 9 and 8 respectively. The Mustangs play Piute to finish the season. In other basketball news, the boys region Sophomore Tournament begins play at Wayne High in Bicknell Thursday , with the tournament finals moved up to Friday to allow fans to see the girls championship on Saturday in Dixie.
