Show Four Elections For Garfield This Year By Bill Cox Garfield Co. Republican Chair The year 2000 may go down in history as "THE election year". Voters will trek to the polls four times to cast ballots. A special election on Feb. 8 will decide the fate of Garfield Memorial Hospital. In Boulder, a hospital meeting is set for Thursday night, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall. Hospital Foundation Board member Ada Cox will explain hospital issues and field questions. Registered voters in several areas of the county have already received notice that their balloting will be done by mail. They must return the County Clerk's notice before Feb. 2 to receive an official ballot which must again be promptly returned to Panguitch. Larger communities will have polls open. On Mar. 10 the first Western States Presidential Primary will be held right here in Garfield County. Republican candidates who have filed are Utah Senator Orrin Hatch, Steve Forbes, George Bush, Arizona Sen. John McCain, Gary Bauer and Alan Keyes. Democrats may choose between Al Gore and New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley. The Independent hopefuls are Howard Phillips and Earl F. Dodge. We may expect to see and hear from our state legislators far more than usual this Spring since all 75 of the state House seats are up for grabs and half of the Utah Senate seats. (See ELECTIONS on page 3-A) ELECTIONS From Front Page The Governor, Lt. Gov., State Auditor, State Treasurer, U.S. Senator, and all three Congressman will be challenged at the polls on June 27 in the state Primary. The general election will follow five months later on Nov. 7. Lawmakers elected in November will help shape Utah government for years to come. The new Legislators Legis-lators will have the opportunity to redistrict the state in 2001 by redrawing state and congressional districts. Winning an additional four seats in the Utah Senate would give the Democrats a majority. Starting with the 2000 precinct caucus on March 27, the GOP is requiring all elected precinct officers and delegates to register as Republicans. Repub-licans. The ruling is to encourage party affiliation and to eliminate those who are trying to subvert Republican efforts. Past voter registration forms did not have a slot for declaring the voters party of choice until two years ago. County officials estimate that as high as 95 percent of the voters are registered as "unaffiliated." Anyone desiring to participate in Republican activities on the local level is urged to contact the County Clerks office (800-636-8826) to determine the status of their registration, and request a new mail-in form if needed. No known change has been made by the Democrats.
