They headed for the state tournament this Bobcats Place 2nd, Moquis Place 4th In Region 15 Round Robin Games By John Yardley The Panguitch Bobcats and Escalante Moquis each qualified for the Boys 1A State Tournament last week in Cedar City at the Region 15 Round Robin Tournament. week with high hopes and a second place spot. They were accompanied by Escalante's Moquis who took fourth place. Panguitch went to the final game, losing 70-67 to Piute, while the Moquis lost their game for third and fourth to Wayne, 68-52. Bryce Valley played a terrific game against Piute to open the tournament, losing barely at the end 82-74 and then were eliminated by Enterprise 8 1-54. Panguitch stopped Valley the first dav 55-46. The Bobcats played a great first half and then played even for the win that put them into state. Jeremy Withers scored 13, Gaylen Dalton 12 and Justin Miller 1 1 to lead the way for PHS. The huge win for Panguitch came on Thursday in the semifinals semi-finals as they upset the number-one-ranked Wayne Badgers 56-49 in a very thrilling victory. Justin Miller played perhaps the best all-around all-around game of his career pumping in 18 points and leading the Bobcats to the win. Wayne led by 10 in the first half only to see PHS come back on a big basket by Scott Henrie at the end of the half to cut the lead to 23-17. Down the stretch, the Bobcats executed an outstanding defense and captured their biggest win of the season under coaches Kay Englestead and Ted Chidester. Tyler Barney had five steals in the first half and played a stellar floor game. Gaylen Dalton was big with 14 points and Jeremy Withers knocked down 11. John Hulet ran the offense and the whole bench did a good job. Saturday the Bobcats played catch-up the whole game against the high-powered offense of Piute. Matt Tebbs, who scored 17 in the second half, gave Panguitch a 48-47 48-47 lead with a minute left in the third, but Lex Allen, who killed the Bobcats down the stretch, put Piute up 49-48 after three. Down the final minute, Panguitch came from seven back to have a shot to tie. Tyler Barney cranked 'in 23 points including a big three near the end to go along with the 17 from Tebbs to lead the Bobcats to the second place finish. It was a great championship game and a nice win for Piute. Antimony's Riley Roberts was magnificent with 22 to pace the T-Birds, followed by lLcx Allen with 20, including two threes and a two in the final stretch jun. Bryce Blackwcll, who had a solid tournament for Piute scored 12 in the final. An interesting note in the Piute H game, Piute hit 22 of 30 free-throws free-throws while Panguitch made 4 of 6 and yet the game was still very close. Escalante upset Enterprise the first day as they kept it close all the way. Freshman forward Ryan Coitam nailed three straight free throws with the game on the line to give the Moquis the win. Escalante hit 16 of 20 free throws in stopping Enterprise. The duo of Dusty Barnson (19) and Garrett Cottam (17) provided the fire power for the Moquis. The win was really a shocker to Enterprise, who was later eliminated from the tournament on Saturday for the first time in memory. The Moquis played their hearts out in the first game and never quite got back on that championship level. Dusty Barnson hit for 22 and Garrett Cottam 15 in a losing cause, 70-58. Saturday, Escalante caught a Wayne team upset by Panguitch and the Badgers were not to be denied. The Moquis played much better than on Friday and got it close once with about five minutes to play behind three straight baskets by Phillip Nelson, but fell short 68-52. 68-52. Nelson hit for 11 alorg with Garrett Cottam. Dusty Barnson scored 14. He was eight for nine from the line in the first half. Bryce Valley gave Piute all they wanted, actually leading 74-72 with z ininute and a half to play, before Piute erupted to win 82-74. Waylon Brinkerhoff hit from everywhere, finishing with 32, while the rest of the team also played very well. Clint Brinkerhoff went inside for 19, Lance Syrett and Brandon Johnson were tough off the glass and Tim Leech hit from outside. Lance had 12 hard earned points, Leech 9 and Johnson 7 for Coach Greg Hughes' team. It was a brilliant effort for a team that has battled up and down all year and a game the Mustangs could have won. It was a tribute to the Bryce Valley boys to play this well against the eventual champion T-Birds. T-Birds. Friday the Mustangs played a hot first quarter, before falling to Enterprise 81-54. Waylon Brinkerhoff nailed 17, Clint 13, Lance Syrett 10 and Brandon Johnson 4 in their last game for the Mustangs. |
