Show Garfield School Districi To Teach Local History, Geography Class To respond to the needs of the community, Superintendent Henry Jolley, Garfield County School District, held a special meeting at Bryce Way restaurant to discuss the implementation into the district curriculum, a course desigi.ed to educate students more fullyon local history and geography with a focus on particular points of interest to the tourist or visitor to the area. Since tourism con-1 stitutes one of the main industries of the area, and many students are employed in tourist related employment even before graduation, the value of such a course of study was pointed out to a group of interested residents. Local employers had brought the need to the attention of Superin tendent Jolley, commenting that it appeared that sutdents who had been hired by them in the past were unable to converse knowledgeably about their local area with tourists. Alton Frazier, director, Utah Travel Council, pointed out to the group ' that the council can be an important resource to the Garfield County com- . munity with possible cooperative funding being available. John D. Hunt, Institute of Outdoor Recreation I and Tourism, Unviersity of Utah, indicated that although his organization was not experienced in setting up curriculum study, it was in a position to provide other valuable aids such as films, tapes and printed materials. He complimented the district on the approach to the r problem and suggested that other districts may be watching Garfield's pilot course. The possibility of vocational funding was discussed since such funding goes hand in hand with future placement of students In area em ployment. It was also suggested that a contest be held to ascertain the "most well informed and courteous" area employee and Hunt recommended a contest similar to the familiar "College Bowl". |
