N Morrison was the old timer who knew that the San Francisco mining district in Beaver Belver County was not through despite its early day production record of fifty four odd million dollars Morrison Morrison Morrison Mor Mor- rison a veteran Utah mining man haunted Salt Lake City's exchange place for years seeking someone who would stake him to start in reviving the old district He began rounding u up properties properties properties proper proper- ties many of which had gone one to ta tax sale in the twenties and finally secured the backing of William H. H Child Salt Lake Broker Today the district is on the come-back come trail but Morrison did not live to see the fruition of his efforts He died in 1948 1918 The story of minin mining minim in iT Beaver County had its beginning in 1875 Into that region of weird beauty of outline and coloring peculiar to the desert alternating broad desert valleys and sharply eroded mountain mountain mountain moun moun- tain ridges two prospectors James Ryan and Samuel Hawkes en route to Squaw Springs to investigate reports of a new find accidentally discovered an interesting outcrop on the north slope of Grampian Mountain They sunk a shallow shaft to explore their discovery and found some rich silver ore But they were not convinced and lacking capital sold their claims for 25 The second article in this series will appear soon in these columns |
