Tho bill carries an appropriation appro-priation or almost $134,000,000. It was beroro tho senate Tor two days, tho debato being confined almost exclusively exclu-sively to tho battleship question. Two Important amendments were ndoptod on Monday. One or them, offered of-fered by r-ntor Johnston, appropriates appropri-ates $4C for tho purchase of tor-pod tor-pod -oats "whero vitals are below y normal load lino;" tho other by Senator James eliminates railroad, county and municipal bonds from securities se-curities that may bo deposited by contractors. Tho naval Increase for tho fiscal year ending Juno 30, 1911, provided by tho bill, Is as follows: Two first-class battloships to cost not exceeding $6,000,000 each and when equipped with armor and armament arma-ment about $12,500,000 each. Two fleet colliers to cost not exceeding ex-ceeding $1,000,000 each. Five submarine torpedo boats not exceeding a total of 2,500,000. Six torpedo-boat destroyers to cost not exceeding $760,000. The house bill provided only four submarines and no torpedo-boat de-stroyors. |
