Authentic news has boon received from Callonte, Nevada, of tho results of a disastrous flood at that placo. Editor Robert E. Graham of tho Callento Express has made his way from Callento to Modena, on horseback, ono of tho two horses he was using having beon drowned while swimming tho swollen river trying try-ing to get out of Callento for help. Graham says that Callente Is badly damaged, and that help is needed, especially food. Ho reported that the Salt Lako Route dopot was undermined under-mined by tho waters and that there was three feet of mud and sand In the roundhouse. At one time the water had been higher in ho roundhouse round-house than tho driving wheels of the engines. Many buildings wore wrecked, some of them floated off down stream like h'ouseboats, and tho water had at times poured jnto tho houses over the window sills. 15vory houso In tho piace that remains re-mains standing has ful.y ono foot of mud on its ground floor. Every wagon and railroad brldgo in the vicinity of Callento Is gone and practically prac-tically all modern means of communication communi-cation aro destroyed. During the worst of the flood tho people had to desert their homes, many in scant clothing, and fly to tho hills for safety. At the Hot Springs of Callento the flood waters poured over the transoms of tho bathroom doors. Tho full extent ex-tent of the damage Is not known at this time, either In Callento or farther far-ther down Uie valley, but according to best reports tho town Is practically a wreck. |
