Show DEMAND FOR CHERRY 8TOCK. Chance for Some Enterprising Amer lean Horticulturist to Grow Trees. W. F. Helkes of Huntsvllle, Ala,, states there are imported Into the United States from France annually 10,000,000 to 15,000,000 cherry stocks. Fairly trustworthy figures show that from this number of stocks the output of merchantable trees at two years old, of all sizes, Is not more than one-third one-third of the numbor of stocks planted, and of theso not more than one-third will grade flvo-olghths and up. Tho first difficulty encountored In cherry growing is In getting a stand. So much depends on tho condition of tho plants on their arrival from Franco. Thero are various causes of Injury from tho tlmo the plants leave tho grower In Franco to tho time of their arrival at destination. There Is more or less danger from freezing or heating heat-ing on the way. Sometimes tho plants nre dug too early, and suffer from being be-ing heeled In, or they aro dug when tho ground isHoo wet and packed in boxes before they are separated from the mudNand properly dried. In this condition they sturt to grow In tho boxes, and however carefully thoy may bo handled, thoro Is sure to bo heavy loss In planting. In somo Instances In-stances tho plants aro grown on land unsulted for their growth, when thoy suffer in health, quality and appearance. appear-ance. Such plants are abnormally branched, and usually presont a blackish appearanco of the roots. There is room for some enterprising horticulturist hero who will collect Mazzard cherry seeds and grow some of the seedlings required by nurserymen nursery-men for budding and grafting .purposes. |
