Show J respected escalante pioneer called to his heavenly maker funeral services for joseph H spencer were held april 11 in the north ward chapel as follows choir sang hark from afar prayer was offered by bishop 11 C bailey singing oh my aly father A sketch of brother spencer s life was read by joseph A griffin J R porter sr gave a short talk the school band played 16 nearer my god to thee willard heaps spoke of his intimate association with brother spencer the choir sang one of his favorite songs song s that beautiful golden gate patriarch E R A griffin spoke next followed by a few remarks by parley B porter bishop wm mitchell gave a few remarks in behalf of tile the bishopric choir sang till the tion day benediction was pronounced pro iced by james alvey sr biographical sketch of tile the life of joseph H spencer who died at escalante garfield county april 9 1924 mr spencer was born bom at gar stai ag lancashire england december c aber 25 26 1842 he moved from there to when a small boy he bec amea member of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints january Jant lary 3 1864 and was baptized by elder alfred dickenson and confirmed by E elder ider henry heaps april 29 1865 he left friends relatives and all earthly possessions lie had bad for the kingdom of gods sake and started for the valleys of the mountains landingin new york may 30 1865 from there he be went ta alabama then to niagara spending a few da days ys there then from niagara to quincy then crossing the mississippi and on to wyoming nebraska arriving there june 16 1865 leaving there august 4 by ox team and enduring ing all the hardships that no one except our faithful pioneers can tell of he arrived in salt lake city november 9 1865 going from there to ogden he then was called with other pioneers to settle the southern part of utah october 23 1866 he arrived at toquerville and from there lie he went to panaca where he resided for some five or six years at panaca he met mci and was married to his good wife jane ellen haslam am from panaca they moved to in 1871 in 1875 lie he was one of the first pioneers to explore the escalante valley bringing his family to escalante the following spring where they have since resided sided le step by step as his good work merited it he was advance din the priesthood until lie he reached the office of high priest december 1 1900 he was chosen as presiding high priest which office lie he held until his death he served a as s sunday school superintendent for twenty two years the f first i sunday schools being held the first nine years in in a lumber shanty and in dwelling houses his good wife proceeded prece eded him to the great beyond eight years ago in their marriage union which lasted forty seven years there were thirteen children sev enty four grandchildren and nineteen grandchildren great brother spencer is is survived by mary allen alien john samuel thomas and george spencer martha S bushman annie alvey alice haycock and mrs thomas A king joseph and orson spencer and susanana died some years go mrs mary allen alien eldest daughter who resides at payson was here at the time of his death james has been ill the but is |
