Show w national fore forests ss return large larg c inc income arne to public revenue amounting to r was iwas paid into the united states treasury from the national forests says the forest service united states department of agriculture ri in its annual report made public today receipts for the last quarter were far in excess of those for any prec proceeding ceding ter in the administration of the national forests except one in 1920 nearly four and a half million of these receipts are derived from the use of timber and forage the remainder for the use of land in eluding sites income producing business on the national forests showed remarkable stability the report continues in view of the depressed or uncertain conditions in the tim timber ber and livestock industry of the west which afford the principal markets for national forest prod products acts the abnormally low output of western saw mills which caused a decrease in receipts from s timber sales saler for the proceeding prece eding year continued until the last quarter of the fiscal year 1922 but for that quarter they alicy exceeded and for the entire year they totaled and were vere almost identical with those of approximately 22 per cent of the cattle and 55 per cent of the sheep in the western states are 1 grazed upon national forest ranges during part or all of the year the grazing business of the forests consequently reflects closely the conditions inthe in the livestock industry of the west which has been passing through one of the most severe financial depressions of its history twenty five per cent of all national forest receipts are given to counties in which alvy th y lie to 1 ie be used for schools and roads |
