Ilinea presented approved bona and asked for retail liquor license. li-cense. Granted. Petitions from Kerstein Elerson and Ingrid Hoover aski'ng for abatement of taes were referred. Also a petition from John M. Wilson in behalf of Caroline Wilson asking to be relieved from paying city taxes on account of no benefits derived from Provo city. In response to a petition from T. E. Thurman, Councilors Ward, llalladay and McEwan were appointed a special committee to investigate and report on Mr. Thurman's claim of $20.00 for services ser-vices "s supervisor and water-master from January 1, 1894 to January 10, 1894. BEPOBTS OF CITY OFFICERS. Recorder Dixon submitted his annual an-nual financial statement of receipts and disbursements, showing the amount received and expended by the two separate councils, last council commencing November 13, 1893, and ending December 31, 1893, having received $12,549.90 and paid out $4,522.-90; $4,522.-90; the present council commencing January 1, 1894 and ending November 1, 1894, having received $13 351.45 and disb ursed $15,754.73. Tnere were on November 1st an overdraft due treasurer treas-urer ot $741 38 and warrants in circulation circula-tion unpaid $4,618 18, so that in ad dition to the bonded indebtedness of the citv, notes and interest due, the city ca.h account, is $5,359.56 "in the hole." The report will be published in detail in both local papers some time iu December. It was referred to the committee on finance to be au dited. The trpasurer's report for the quarter ending November 1, 1894 showed receipts re-ceipts to be $4,751 59, disbursements $5,492.97. This report was also referred. Superintendent of waterworks, Ephraim Homer, submitted his report which was also referred; lao hia report re-port as assessor and collector of water' rates. Fire Chief Withere reported only two fits May 21 to November 1, 1894. Sexton Johnson reported 49 deaths, 32 males and 17 feniaies, also cause of deatli, for the year ending October 31, 1894. Report referred . The pound-keeper's report wa3 also referred. Marshal Knight for the year ending. November 1, 1894, made 1C6 arrests and received for fines in cash $3S9 00. Amount paid iu imprisonment $179 20, pardoned $20.00, case on appeal $50.00. Justice Wedgwood, January 1st, to November 1st. Cases filed, 73 ; convictions convic-tions 52; acquittals 7; dismissed by city attorney 83; not heard 5; appealed 1, total amount of fines assessed $638.20 Amount paid in cash, $389.00. W atermaster Allred submitted annual report commencing January 1, 1894, ending November I, 1894, showing tax schedule for water tax to be $26S8.30. The committee on judiciary to whom was referred the list of tax sales and coats of same for the purpose of ascer taining the .correctness or the costs charged by Collector Openshaw reported re-ported haying found the claim to be just and correct and recommended that the sum of $972.25 be placed to Mr. Openshaw's credit. Adopted. The committee on judiciary recommended recom-mended that tne mayor and city attorney attor-ney be instructed to meet with the board or otter authorized representative representa-tive of the Provo Woolen Mills company, com-pany, with authority to eettle on some equitable basis the-W. Ii. Pike dam age judgment. If settlement cannot be had in this way, then suit will follow. Adopted. The committee on finance reported the city's collectable tax this year to be $17,604.59. A Dig batch of claims, in all $897.35, was allowed and council adjourned until Monday evening, November 12, 1894. Mrs. Willmirth White. Mrs. S.A.King, Mrs. Francis Clark and Mrs. Hannah Pike. It was suggested that we, together with the Spanish Fork club, ats'st in organizing clubs of this kind in the ether cities of the county. The subject was freely discussed.! The secretary was instructed to confer with the Spanish Span-ish Fork club on this matter. By vote, the club decided to meet next Thursday niptht, November 15th, when a good program wi'l ba rendered. The following rea dutions were read and unanimously adopted : "Whebeas, That gigantic monopoly known ib the American Sugar Trust company, that caa:e into existence under the republican protection policy, has inyaded Utah and threatens the very existence of the sugar industry of the territory, and, "Whereas, Democrats everywhere, while not believing it proper to employ the sovereign taxing power of the gov ernment to fayor private industries and build up private fortunes, nevertheless never-theless believe in supporting home industries, in-dustries, and, ' "Whereas. It is the mission of the democratic party to strike down trusts, combines and monolies that would enslave the people; therefore be it "i?eoii'ed, By the Women's Democratic Demo-cratic Club of Provo in meeting assembled, assem-bled, that tbey wilUtand by the managers mana-gers of the sugar factory at Lehi, in jghting the sugar trust in Utah by purchasing only Utah sugar, though higher prices may have to be paid for the home product. By this message we send greeting to the managers and stockholders of the Lehi sugar factory. And be it further "Resolved, That wo call upon all the ladies of Utah to assist us in the fight, so long as this infamous trust threatens threat-ens our home industry, by pledging themselves to purchase only of merchants mer-chants handling the Lehi sugar."
