Show tiiadstone Started the Tune, The following story of Mr. Gladstono J i3 told in tho reminiscences of the late ; Rev. James Dodds: "Dr. Guthrie once paid a visit to the Duke of Argyll at i Inverary castle by special invitation. A large and brilliant assemblage of guests, I including Mr. Gladstone, were staying at the castle, and before they retired for the uijjht Dr. Guthrie was asked by the duke to conduct 'family worship. ' 4 With great pleasure I will conduct it, ' said tho doctor, 'but in tho castle of Argyll we must observe the good old Presbyterian Presby-terian form and begin by singing a psalm. ' It was agreed that a Scotch song should bo sung to a Scotch tune, but tho difficulty was to find a 'pre center' to 'start the tune' and lead the i singing. After a number of ladies and gentlemen had been appealed to and had j declared themselves unfit for the duty j Mr. Gladstono stepped forward, saying, J 'I'll raise the tune, Dr. Guthrie, ' and j well did he perform his task." |
