Show THE OGDEN CONVENTION. There has never been a convention held in Utah at -which Utah county has been bo honored as on yesterday; in fact Utah county got all her delegation delega-tion asked for, first A. O. Smoot for temporary president and Mrs. Electa Bullock first vice-president and Mrs. Jakeman assistant secretary of the permanent organization. Perhaps the most amusing incident of the convention waBwhen Beaver the first on the list, was called by the secretary secre-tary to make its nomination for candidates candi-dates for governor , it transferred its light to Salt Lake county, and called upon Judge O. W. Powers to make its nominating nom-inating epeech. The judge was president presi-dent of the convention, and in response re-sponse to the call turned in his usual j confident manner to the first vice-president to occupy the chair whilst he made the epeech, but on turning to her he seemed hitherto to have forgotten for-gotten that a lady was occupying that position, and the intrepidity of the fearless Tuscarora chief became lost eight of and swallowed up in the gallantry gal-lantry of the gentlemen, and for once the ex-Grand Sachem, blushing like a schoolboy, falteringly, asked Mrs. Bullock Bul-lock to occupv the chair. She however how-ever was equal to the emergrcy, and with graciou84queenly dignity accepted the unexpected, embarrassing situation, situa-tion, and honored Proyo, and the women of Utah by at once assuming the role of president in a manner which caused every one present to feel that she was master? (mistress?) of the situation, and after the Judge had, in schoolboy fashion, addressed the chair, he recovered from his embarrassment, and nominated John T. Caine for governor in his usual ringing style. The delegation from Utah county are deserving of unstinted praise for their unbroken unity on every vote in which this county was interested and succeeded in getting two nominations from Provo which are ticket etrenghen-ere-. The offices were wisely distributed, and the south at last is pretty fairly recognized. The democracy have made great gain by dividing up the nominations, nomina-tions, four from the north four from Salt Lake and four from the south. Young Utah and new settlers are all represented upon the ticket, fraternity has eupplanted greed, local pride has 1 bowed to public .good, gratitude to public friends dominates private pri-vate preferences, and even Weber county delegation was bo enthused with the overpowering feeling of the convention of "peace on earth, good will to men" thather dele gates worked in harmony with tha rest of the convention except on the one point on which they had positive instructions, and on that point they eimply refrained from votirg. The speech of Bryan ot Nebraska and the wav it was received, and other iike incideuts of the convention, must drive "the enemy" to unequivocally declare their position on the great "silver issue." Roberts' speech of acceptance ac-ceptance cannot be construed otherwise other-wise than as a challenge to his political politi-cal opponent, and if we do not mistake mis-take Mr. AUen'e character, will lead to a discussion that will win vast numbers num-bers of voters for our spiendid ticket, and in connection with the other good features of the convention will raise a tidal wave of enthusiasm for democracy demo-cracy on which every bark launched yesterday may ride to triumphant Victory on election day. |
