Show Th Herald, Tuesday, Bhows up, in delt fashion, the gloring inconsistencies of the Tribune's course on the commonweal com-monweal queetion. It is not sufficient excuse for the Tribune to say that its wavering is to be ascribed to the total lack of precedent. In cases like this, tbe general spirit of the law is to be consulted. One very ancient provision provis-ion of law asserts, "Thou ehalt not steal." It is true tbe original statute did not add a "railroad train," but the Inhibition would scarcely have been stronger if it had. We are rather of the opinion that the dear eld Trib. has discovered that the wealer movement is not to become an engulfing tide, and that it is controlable, so it genially re turns to ieasonl If ay, it goes just a toss beyond Merritt, Miner and West. We would not be surprised if by next week it were in favor of drawing them up in line and shooting them down as the Spanish authorities did the nihilists nihil-ists at Barcelona, itfow if the Tribune will adopt the law as its only guide, it will save the ridicule it is the victim of now, in all the future. Hungry men, workless men, distressed men, disappointed men of all kinds, must be taught to-obey the law just as rich, happy and prosperous men must. Be- Ifore the law the classes are equal. Enforce En-force obedience and there will be no complaint. The TriJune should never forget that as a precedent the law is mighty hard to turn down. |
