Show JOE L i RAWLINS The democratic teriitorial conven tlon true to itself true to the terr tory and true to the best interests of every many woman and child in it triumpbantly renominated the aboye great man to the high office he ha held for the last two years and in doing do-ing so has performed a great work for Utah Not the slightest fear of defeat need be entertained The enlightenment enlighten-ment the character the intelligence of the new state was present in the house and the convention but executed the mandate of the people A more magnificent mag-nificent ovation no man ever received and certainly no Utonian ever deserved de-served a greater one When Mr Rawlins came upon the Binge it seemed as though the roof of the building muet be forced into the air by the wild excitement of the people peo-ple A modest aye even a diffident gentleman stood bowing amid the i deafening applause After several minuteavain attempt to repress the applause ap-plause he commenced in a low earnest voice devoid of all the trickery of oratory ora-tory and the tale of his wonderful work in Washington was told with the modest dividence of a school girl He explained with an air of perfect truth ulnees the bitterness of the republican republi-can opposition to admission and the Mp H y ° t There was not an intelligent being in all the thousands of that grand audience audi-ence who was not fully and absolutely convinced of the entire candor and absolute abso-lute correctness of every earnest statement state-ment made The republicans both in and out of congress opposed admission because they understood well that Utah could not be true to herself without enthroning en-throning the democratic party in the new state It was this certainty which underlies the whole course of their hostility and the deferring was the result of a veteran determination to put off tneevil day to them of the creation of another democratic state as long as possible Let BO democrat hereafter ever accuse Joe Rawlins of being alukewarm democrat or lacking I in any degree In the force of his hatred hat-red to the rule the prejudice or the dishonesty of the republican party The fact is be is a great man and a great democrat who will live out his democratic principles no matter who may falter or waver No truer m never n-ever served a loyal peopleandit is extremely ex-tremely fortunate for Utah that at this juncture she has a man of Rawlins stamp in her councils Indeed the new tate will be several hundreds of thou oanJa richer than she would have been naane not been m congress during the days of the pendancy of the statehood measures If Mr Rawlins will recite this simple sim-ple and convincingly truthful tale in the same manly modest tones in a I dozen places in the territory we believe be-lieve we kno r the good honest people of Utah well enough to be able to tell them tell l the democracy and Mr Rawlins both that even the gates of hell cannot prevail against him and the democracy will be the party of the newstate lor many generations to comeWewant We want to say this much more Having spent a long life in active political po-litical service and seen a good many democratic bodies at labor we have never seen a finer body of men or I a better or more determined and abler Convention at work No fear for the democracy of Utah or her leaders Triumph is fixed already It only now remains sacred duty to make to majority ma-jority as large as possible |
