He looked up just in time to see that the train was too close for him to safely make it across to the other side of the two tracks, and attempted to try and put the vehicle in reverse. Panicking, he put it into neutral and was not able to avoid the collision. Along with the Sheriff's Officers, North Summit Fire and NS Ambulance, as well as Uinta County Ambulance, arrived at the scene. The driver was checked out, release and pronounced okay. The truck received heavy damage. The driver was very fortunate to come out alive in this situation. Mr. Steve Camp has been selected to replace Mr. Gary Twitchell who is leaving South Summit to work in the Alpine School District. Mr. Camp comes to South Summit with a broad range of administrative experience at the Junior and Senior High level. He has worked as an administrator in urban and rural settings and in small and large schools. Mr. Camp has excellent training and experience in Standards Based Education, Data Driven Decision Making, and the collaboration of Professional Learning Communities. He has a firm belief that all students can achieve at high levels and be "Career and College Ready" if they are given the right opportunities and training. As a principal Mr. Camp understands the need for "Scaffold Instruction" to meet the needs of all students in effectively implementing the teaching of state standards. "I see the evolving of education as one of the most dynamic processes we experience. Information is expanding daily; learning is a constant in our lives in one form or the other. Whether it's education from standard based research and development, or education from "the school of hard knocks', we all share in the effects it brings into our lives. Photo courtesy Patrick Wiggins, NASA / JPL Solar System Ambassador to Utah A much rarer, though less spectacular appearing event was in the Utah's skies on June 5 when Venus spent the afternoon and evening slowing moving across the face of the Sun. "Eclipses of the Sun which can happen every year are comparatively common", notes NASA /JPL Solar System Ambassador to Utah Patrick Wiggins, "compared to transits of Venus which have been seen by humans only 7 times since the invention of the telescope in the early 1600s." Previous transits were observed in 1631, 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874, 1882 and 2004. Wiggins says that the next one will occur in 2117 but that one will not be visible from Utah. The next one visible from Utah will be in 2125. Times for the transit were pretty much the same for all of Utah with Venus first starting to move in front of the Sun about 4:06 p.m. MDT. It then spent the afternoon and evening moving very slowly across the Sun. The Sun set shortly before 9:00, long before Venus had a chance to move off the Sun at about 10:49 p.m. As with the recent solar eclipse proper eye protection was needed to view the view the transit. Fortunately the special glasses thousands of Utahans purchased to view May's eclipse were able to be used to view the transit. Additional information on the transit can be found on Wiggins' Solar System Ambassador website at UTAHASTRO.INFO. Our hope is that we combine the lessons we learn with our previous knowledge and experience to guide us towards a productive place in our society," said Mr. Camp. Mr. Camp has been a principal at North Sevier Junior High for eight years, principal at North Sevier High School for three years and a vice principal at Pleasant Grove Junior High for four years. He comes to South Summit with excellent recommendations from his current Principal, co-workers and Superintendent. He has also been highly endorsed by other Superintendents including State Su- perintendent Dr. Larry Shumway. He is anxious to further his administrative experience at South Summit High School. Building relationships, and enhancing educational opportunities for both the students and staff are important to Steve and he believes great things can be accomplished through collaborative efforts. He recognizes the many great things happening at South Summit High and believes that through his leadership the school can continue on its quest for excellence. Steve and his wife Jaylynne plan on making their home in Kamas Valley. Check out new sign at Summit County/Kamas Library Branch SUMMIT mum • • 044.1 F. 40r 101611k-frii* kik*. ArL "`,.
